Winter steam at the Centenary Christmas Cracker
30th and 31st of December 2006

Looking for a great way to round off Christmas and see out the old year? Then look no further than the GWR!

2006 is the Centenary year of the former Great Western route between Stratford on Avon and Cheltenham, over part of which the present-day GWR now runs. There will be plenty of variety to entertain you with up to six locomotives in steam and an eclectic mix of double headed trains, local trains, goods trains – and of course a warm winter welcome from our volunteer staff. On-train catering will be offering seasonal refreshments including mulled wine and – if we’re lucky enough to enjoy bright, cold days the steam effects will be worth a million photographs!

Lineside day passes for photographers will be available from Toddington station (remember your high-visibility jacket, otherwise the station shop will be happy to sell you one!). Normal train fares apply and you can travel as much as you like, all day - £9.50 for adults, £8.00 for senior citizens and £6.00 for children aged 5-15. Fantastic value!

Locomotives working include (subject to availability):

  • ‘King George’, the railway’s own bright red 0-6-0ST saddle tank engine, just returned from the East Anglian Railway Museum;
  • the National Railway Museum’s celebrated 4-4-0 express locomotive no. 3440 ‘City of Truro’;
  • Modified Hall class no. 7903 ‘Foremarke Hall’ – the only working GW-designed Hall class locomotive on a heritage railway;
  • David Shepherd’s heavy freight 2-10-0 no. 92203 ‘Black Prince’;
  • visiting Southern Region Merchant Navy express locomotive no. 35005 ‘Canadian Pacific’ and … possibly a surprise visitor!
