GWSR.com Webmaster

The GWR Commercial Department is seeking a volunteer to take over the role of GWSR.com Webmaster. This is an exciting opportunity to take control of one of the best and most widely read websites in the heritage railway movement. Running the website is hard work as the description below explains, but it is rewarding and entertaining. The present webmaster is 'retiring' due to other commitments, but there will be plenty of opportunity for familiarisation and hand over.

The role of webmaster involves the following activities:

  • Complete control of the gwsr.com website on a day-to-day basis.
  • Liaison with the editorial team.
  • Publishing new content and ensuring existing content is up-to-date.
  • Responding to emails and enquiries from volunteers and the public.
  • Monitoring the discussions on “The Waiting Room” online forum.
  • Ensuring that the website remains available and fully operational.
  • Reporting to the Commercial Director.

The following qualifications are essential:

  • A good understanding of HTML 4.01 and CSS.
  • Familiarity with Internet protocols, including SMTP, HTTP, FTP, POP3 and IMAP4.
  • A basic understanding of the operation of an Apache Webserver running on Linux.
  • An understanding of DNS.

The following qualifications are desirable:

  • Familiarity with online control panels for web & email administration, (specifically cPanel).
  • Basic understanding of PHP Perl and MySQL.

In addition, the applicant must have a broadband Internet connection. Software for maintaining the current website will be provided (NetObjects Fusion 7.5 - familiarity with which would be an advantage).

Please note that this is a responsible position, since GWSR.com is the official online public face of the GWR. The applicant must be a member of GWRL, and either an existing volunteer well-known to the GWR, or well-known to an existing volunteer in a position of responsibility.

The job involves sending/receiving a total of approximately 40-50 emails per week, and several hours per week of effort. It is a year-round task, and requires a mature, professional and well-organised approach.

For further details or to express an interest, please email Tony Stockwell (commercial.director at gwsr.com) or Dave Robinson (webmaster at gwsr.com), or write to Tony Stockwell at the usual address.
