King George overhaul begins
posted 17th April 2007

After the disappointing news that the GWR's lovely red Hunslet saddle tank locomotive failed its boiler exam, the decision has been taken to completely overhaul the locomotive rather than simply retube the boiler for the remaining months on its 10-year boiler 'ticket'. Work on the project has now started with the cab, some boiler and smokebox fittings and other components removed so far. The boiler will be lifted from the frames, which will allow both a proper examination of the boiler and assessment of the work necessary (not believed to be extensive) and allow for easy access to the motion and valve gear between the frames.

The objective is to complete the necessary work as quickly as possible and then make the engine available for hire to other railways. Considerable interest was shown by smaller lines in giving King George work - bringing in useful income for future overhauls and maintenance as well as acting as a worthy ambassador for our line.

These pictures show the work completed so far.

4. At the end of Sunday and King George has lost cab roof and sides, dome cover, backhead fittings and smokebox fittings
