Pinch Bar

Pinch bar closeupDid you know that on level track one person can get a 34 ton carriage moving without the aid of a locomotive? The use of a pinch bar enables this to be achieved.

Pinch bar in useIn its most basic form it is a long handled crowbar. The one shown in the photograph above is a more sophisticated version. It is placed under the wheel then pushed down as illustrated in the second photograph. When the bar is depressed the rectangular piece in the middle lifts and tries to ‘jack up’ the wheel. As this can’t happen the wheel moves forward a few inches.

Once the vehicle is moving it is possible for 4 or 5 people to keep up the momentum and put the coach or wagon in its intended position.
