2004 marks the 200th anniversary of the first steam locomotive to run on rails - Richard Trevithick’s locomotive at the Pen Y Darren Ironworks - as well as the centenary of the first 100mph run by the City of Truro. It is also 400 years since the first recorded existence of rail track in Britain. As such, 2004 will see a wide variety of celebrations marking these important milestones.

The Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway is also celebrating - during the Spring, City of Truro is visiting the GWR, while Toddington Station will celebrate its centenary (it opened in December 1905). The railway will have two celebrations of steam this year, too - over the weekend of 7th, 8th and 9th of May and 11th and 12th of September. Keep visiting this site to find out more!

The National Railway Museum is putting on a major celebration to mark the bi-centenary of steam on the railway: Visit the Railfest 2004 website for more details.
