Well, 2009 marks the 25th anniversary of the first train
operated by the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway at
Toddington. The day that train departed from the station on a
journey of just 700 yards, a single coach hauled by a diminutive
tank locomotive called 'Cadbury no. 1', was filled with excitement,
hope and optimism. The new railway company had completed purchase
of the stretch of derelict land from just north of Cheltenham to
just north of Broadway. That day was 21st April 1984 and
since then, the railway has been gradually growing - to the extent
that Broadway is now firmly in its sights.
So there is a lot to enjoy during 2009. If you are aged 25
or under and accompanied by a fare paying passenger of any age, you
have a chance to travel for free during March, and join us in
celebrating this special year. Postman Pat is paying a visit this
year, as is Fireman Sam - real 'don't-miss' dates for all the
family! And there will be our usual eclectic mix of steam and
diesel events taking place.
So what are you waiting for? Click here for the low-down and visit our events
page. This will be regularly updated as the year progresses.
