Readers of the Gloucestershire Echo might have been mystified by
a news item that was was really about the GWR's steel 'skew' bridge
at Gretton, but in fact described work being carried out at
Laverton.
So to put the record straight:
- At Gretton, structural repair work is being carried out to the
steel span following a severe bridge strike some months ago.
While carrying out this repair the opportunity is being taken to
refurbish the underside of the deck to arrest corrosion and make
the bridge good for many years to come. Unfortunately, this
work has entailed closure of the Gretton Road and diversions are in
place.
- At Laverton, the 'missing' bridge, removed some years ago with
the agreement of the GWR to allow for access of heavy plant and
equipment associated with construction of a gas pipeline and
pumping station, is at last being replaced with a new concrete
span. This has also entailed closure of the road.
The Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway is sorry for the
inconvenience that is inevitably being caused to local people but
it is carrying out the repairs as quickly as possible. By
bringing forward the maintenance work on the Gretton bridge now,
while the bridge strike damage is being repaired, means that a
further road closure in a year or two won't now be necessary.
More news and pictures will follow shortly.
