Foundation and Key Stage 1

Over the past few years we have hosted a large number of schools bringing Foundation and Key Stage 1 pupils to the Railway, and each visit has been individually tailored to meet the school's needs.

Of course we can organise travel on our steam-hauled trains on a normal, public service, but our heritage diesel railcars have also proved very popular with schools because of their flexibility. We can run the railcar on non-public days when the Railway would normally be closed, so you have the whole Railway to yourselves and can have a visit schedule that suits you. As well as a ride on the train, which many children will have never experienced, we offer a number of other activities across the whole curriculum. We can supply work sheet templates for activities around the station at Winchcombe and we have musicians who will involve the children with railway songs and more.

A typical visit programme might be:

  • 10:00 arrive by coach at Toddington. Toilet break if required.
  • 10:20 depart on railcar to Winchcombe via the Greet tunnel.
  • 11:00 arrive at Winchcombe. Platform activities and music (subject to availability).
  • 12:45 your picnic lunch on the train. Hot water can be provided.
  • 13:45 return to Toddington.
  • 14:00 depart by coach.

We can offer Christmas themed days in December and Teddy Bears' Picnics during the Summer as well as more general and transport-related themes.

The cost is on a sliding scale based on age of the pupils but usually works out at around £5 to £6.50 per pupil. We may be able to share your visit with another school in order to keep your costs down. For more details e-mail us at schoolvisits@gwsr.com. If you include a phone number then we can contact you to discuss your individual requirements and tell you about what we can provide.
