Local food and drink; local steam

  • Railway's second Food & Drink Fayre – 21-22 October at Toddington station

  • More than 40 artisan food and drink exhibitors

  • Something for every taste; washed down by steam!

The Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway's second Food and Drink Fayre is set to whet appetites over the weekend of 21-22 October, at Toddington station (GL54 5DT).

The event is 25% larger than last year – with most exhibitors returning along with exciting new offerings.

John Mayell, volunteer organiser of the event commented: “The huge popularity of last year's Food & Drink Fayre took everyone by surprise and we are building up for an even bigger event this year.

“The aim is to keep this as a local food and drink showcase so almost all of the exhibitors are producers or growers from Gloucestershire and surrounding counties. It's a cornucopia of the many wonderful food and drink products that are produced nearby. So to preserve the local theme, we even turned away some potential exhibitors.

“And what's more, you can come by steam train from Cheltenham – or take an early-bird diesel railcar service that departs Cheltenham Racecourse station at 9.40 each morning. It's a neat link that underlines the importance of our railway in days gone by, when local farmers and producers used to send their products to market by rail, especially fruit and vegetables from the Vale of Evesham, as well as livestock.”

Local producers' wares on show and available to try include bakery items; cheeses and chutneys; honey and jams; puddings pies and cakes; meat products including local bacon and sausages as well as sausage rolls, Scotch eggs and similar; chillies, herbs and spices including Tewkesbury mustard; sweets, chocolates and cookies; fruit juices and dairy products.

Joining local ciders, perries and spirits will be the products of local vineyards. And, so save preparing dinner when you get home, there will be a variety of imaginative locally made ready meals!

John Mayell adds: “This is a great way to discover some of the amazing artisan food and drink products that are available right on our doorstep. And a chance to do some early Christmas shopping!

“Apart from the mouthwatering choices in the Fayre, the railway's own Flag & Whistle cafe will be open and offering a hog roast that can be washed down with a local draught beer or cider – so no-one need go hungry!”

Also new this year will be exhibits from the National Trust; Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) and Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust.

Over the weekend the railway is operating its Red Timetable with two steam locomotives in operation with the addition of a diesel railcar service from Cheltenham Racecourse station at 09.40 on both mornings. The railcar will, in addition, be working local services between Winchcombe and the present northern extent of the Broadway extension, via Toddington. Normal train fares apply. Free car parking at Cheltenham Racecourse and Toddington stations, limited car parking also at Winchcombe (Greet) station.
