Santa EXPERIENCEs 2021

You can choose from two great experiences this year - the loco-hauled Santa Express or the Ride with Santa on our diesel railcar

Travel Information and Terms & Conditions are further down this page - please take a little time to read these if you are booking one of our Santa experiences

Ride with Santa

Travel from Toddington station by an early 1960's diesel rail car with Santa and his elves on board the train, spending lots of time sitting with each family. The number of tickets sold on these trains will be limited, so you will have plenty of space for your family, and there is the added excitement of seeing Santa coming down the train talking to everyone and giving out excellent presents.

  • Travel by diesel railcar from Toddington over the viaduct towards Broadway, before returning to Toddington.
  • A great festive spirit on the ten-mile round trip.
  • Santa travels on the train and visits you at your seat.
  • Plenty of space on the train as we limit numbers to around 20 children on each trip.
  • Complimentary mince pies, hot and cold drinks, biscuits and fruit, in a heated marquee.
  • Top quality presents for the children.
  • Babies under 1 year old require a ticket but travel free and receive a nominal present only.
  • An ideal visit for smaller children who might be concerned when meeting Santa in a busy grotto.
  • Your Santa experience lasts about an hour and a quarter (but allow longer in case of delays).
  • Due to the age of the carriages we regret that wheelchair access is not available.
  • We regret that dogs are not permitted on Santa trains. This does not apply to assistance dogs.
  • Free parking at Toddington station.

£24 per adult and £24 per child (age 1 to 14 years)

(plus £1 p&p fee per booking if tickets mailed out)

Travel Information and Terms & Conditions

Please take time to read the travel information and Terms & Conditions below. Use the quick links to go directly to a subject.

COVID-19 symptoms

If you have had a positive Covid-19 test, have been in contact with a person with Covid-19 within the last 10 days, or are showing any of the symptoms below, then please do not attempt to travel with us:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath
  • Loss of taste or smell

Contact our bookings team on 01242 621905 or 01242 621904 (Mon- Fri 09:00 to 16:00) and we will try to reschedule your booking or, if necessary, arrange a refund.

Booking and tickets

All journeys start and finish at Toddington Station (GL54 5DT).

All tickets must be pre-booked (but please see additional information about wheelchair bookings below); there are no tickets on sale at the station.

When booking, you will be asked to provide the age and gender of the children. This is so that we can provide the most appropriate presents for them. Presents are not intended for children over the age of 14. Babies under one year of age will receive a nominal present.

Tickets are normally ‘print at home’. You will need to bring your tickets, either printed or available on your smart device, to show at Santa Reception. Your ticket will pre-allocate your seating. Alternatively, you may also opt to have the ticket/s posted to you, but we will then need to add a £1 handling charge - and in this case you will need to buy your ticket at least 10 working days before you want to travel to allow processing and postage time.

Adults’ and children’s tickets are NOT interchangeable.

You will need to present your tickets at Santa Reception at Toddington for inspection before being allowed onto the platform. Carriages, compartments, and seats will be clearly marked, and we will have Christmas Elves available to help with directions. All tickets purchased are for a journey departing at a specific time and on a specific day. Passengers missing their booked train will not be able to travel on a later train that day, nor on a different day without making a new booking.

Refund, alterations and cancellation policy

If you are unable to travel on your booked date for non-Covid-19 related reasons we will try to accommodate refunds if they are requested at least 14 days prior to travel. If the travel date is within 14 days, refunds can only be considered if the tickets can be re-sold. Requests for refunds should be made by telephone 01242 621905 (Mon – Fri 09:00 to 16:00) and confirmed by e-mail to development@gwsr.com. No administration fee will apply to refunds.

Similarly, we will try to accommodate alterations if requested at least 14 days prior to travel and provided there are seats available on the new date. No administration fee will apply to alterations.

In the event of severe weather, or Government COVID restrictions resulting in the GWSR being unable to offer our Santa experiences we will issue a full refund and a notice will appear as soon as possible on our website. Where you have given us your mobile telephone number and/or email address at the time of booking, we will endeavour to advise you of any such cancellation by text and/or email.

Although every effort will be made to run the trains as advertised, the GWSR reserves the right to cancel, alter or suspend services without notice. The liability in the event of cancellation will be limited to a refund of the appropriate part of the fare.

Pushchairs and buggies

Because of the types of carriages in use, we can only accommodate small, foldable buggies on the train, which must be put inside your booked compartment or in your allocated seating area. Also, there is no storage space at the station so, if possible, please carry young children onto the train and leave pushchairs and buggies in your car.

Wheelchairs - require phone booking

Regrettably we cannot accommodate wheelchairs on our  Ride with Santa  services.

We can only accommodate one pre-booked wheelchair, in a dedicated area, on each  Santa Express  train. Please DO NOT book online if you need to bring a wheelchair; instead, please call 01242 621905 (Mon- Fri 09:00 to 16:00) to check availability and to make your booking.  If you make a booking online, you will be allocated a non-accessible compartment and may be unable to travel on the day.

Dogs

We regret that we will not be able carry dogs (except for assistance dogs) on our  Santa Express  and  Ride with Santa  trains.

Santa Express – The Train

For our ‘Santa Express’ services we will be running six-carriage loco-hauled trains*; five carriages will be compartment stock; the sixth carriage will be an open coach, and will have suitably distanced seating available.

Most compartments seat 6, but we do have a limited number that will accommodate a maximum of 8, so you will not be able to purchase more than 8 tickets (adults and children) on one order. If you do need more than 8 then contact our admin team by telephone 01242 621905 (Mon – Fri 09:00 to 16:00) or by e-mail to development@gwsr.com.

The toilets on the train will be locked out of use; toilets are available at both Toddington and Winchcombe Stations.

Carriages and seats will be clearly marked and we will have Christmas Elves available to help with directions.

*  Because of engineering works south of Winchcombe, all our trains will be ‘top-and-tailed’, with a steam locomotive hauling the train to Winchcombe and a heritage diesel locomotive returning it to Toddington.

Ride with Santa – The Train

For our ‘Ride with Santa’ services we will be running a three-carriage heritage diesel railcar; all the carriages have open seating but each group will be allocated a complete block of 4 or 6 seats.

Seating will be in blocks of 4 or 6 so you will not be able to purchase more than 6 tickets (adults and children) on one order. If you do need more than 6 then contact our admin team by telephone 01242 621905 (Mon – Fri 09:00 to 16:00) or by e-mail to development@gwsr.com.

The toilets on the train will be locked out of use; toilets are available at Toddington Station.

Carriages and seats will be clearly marked and we will have Christmas Elves available to help with directions.

Station Facilities

Access to the platform will be restricted to those who will be travelling.  Toilets will be open at both stations and hand-sanitiser will be available as you enter each toilet block; all visitors are encouraged to use this and follow the guidelines regarding handwashing.

The Toddington shop will be open, offering Christmas stocking-fillers and gifts.

The Flag and Whistle Café at Toddington will be open.

At the North Pole (Winchcombe Station) our griddle will be selling baps filled with bacon, burgers or sausages.

Covid-19 Precautions

We will be carrying out our normal cleaning on our trains and at stations, we ask that everyone follows markings and signs or instructions given by our volunteers.

GWSR encourages everyone to respect fellow passengers and our volunteers by wearing face coverings whilst inside our shop, buffet cars and cafés (when not eating or drinking), and in open carriages. Your co-operation would be greatly appreciated.

We also request that passengers keep a safe distance from fellow travellers.

All passengers are asked to remove their rubbish and any personal belongings that they may have brought with them.  Rubbish bags can be obtained by asking the Ticket Inspector or Guard if required.
