Journey, Booking and Tickets

All travel will need to be pre-booked and will be one return journey (3 return joiurnies on Diesel Enthusiast Days) starting and finishing at Toddington. Other stations will not be open to visitors or be alternative boarding points. You need to arrive 20 minutes before departure time to allow for processing and boarding. If you would like to finish your journey and your visit to the Railway early by leaving the train at Cheltenham or Broadway this is possible by informing the Guard when you board. Please be aware that, on any steam-hauled service, you will not be able to return on a different train unless separate tickets have been purchased for the two trains.

There will be short stops of around 20 minutes at Cheltenham and Broadway for the locomotive to change ends.

Please note that Hayles Abbey Halt, Winchcombe Station and Gotherington Station will not be available for use by passengers.

Historically we have sent tickets by post.  We will continue to do this if you require a hard copy ticket, but you will need to allow 7 days to ensure safe arrival. In this case we will add a £1 handling charge to the price.

You will however be able to book on-line (up to 3pm the day before you wish to travel) and print the tickets at home. We will also be able to accept your e-ticket being shown to us on your mobile device if you prefer not to print it out. As with a physical or printed ticket it must be shown upon request. Please note, it MUST be the E-TICKET itself shown to our staff and not the email which provides the link to it.

Your tickets will show your carriage and compartment or seat allocation.

Tickets will need to be presented at Toddington for inspection before you will be allowed onto the platform; sanitiser will be available after you enter the platform, and we urge use of this by anyone boarding the trains to reduce potential contamination. Information will be supplied outlining the controls in place for your journey including boarding, cleanliness, social distancing etc.

The Train Layout and Prices

We will be running six-carriage trains; five carriages will be compartment stock. On our normal steam-hauled services each compartment will be available at a minimum cost of £50 for up to two people, with each additional person costing £10 up to a maximum total of 6 people per compartment (total £90). We ask that you ensure that the make-up of your group complies with Government rules. The sixth carriage will be an open coach and will have seating available for individuals and couples at a cost of £25 per person.

We have limited the number of people in the carriages to ensure that we can conform to the government’s guidance on social distancing, so we ask that customers limit movement around the train and observe social distancing rules on platforms and carparks. Please do not stand in the corridors.

Carriages, compartments, and seats will be clearly marked, and we will have station assistants available to help with directions.

In line with other transport bodies and following good practice, face coverings will be required by passengers travelling on our services and whilst on the platform. These may be removed whilst seated in a compartment. Those exempt include children under 11 years old, passengers with disabilities, those with breathing difficulties and anyone travelling with someone who relies on lip reading. Face coverings can be temporarily removed while eating.

  • Vouchers must be surrendered when showing your e-ticket on entry (without your member or shareholder voucher, you will be unable to travel)

Pushchairs and buggies

We have had to change the types of carriages in use and so we can only accommodate small, foldable buggies on the train, which must be put inside your booked compartment. Also, there is no storage space at the station so, if possible, please carry young children onto the train and leave pushchairs and buggies in your car.

Dogs

Well-behaved dogs travel for a flat-rate fare in standard class carriages and compartments (not First Class) but they are not allowed on the seats or tables, and not allowed on any dining trains or in buffet cars. Assistance dogs travel free of charge. For further information click here. Please note, There may be additional restrictions in place at certain of our special events - please see the Travelling with a Dog page on the website.

Catering

We are unable to offer on-train catering in our normal way and we are sorry to say our famous bacon baps will not be available, but you will be able to pre-book food bags that will be delivered to your compartment or seat on the outward leg of your journey at Winchcombe station.  Just add the items when you book your tickets.  Please be aware that food items can be ordered up to 3pm the day before you wish to travel except for Sunday travel when bookings must be placed by 3pm on the Friday.  Bank Holiday orders must be placed by the preceding Thursday. Hot and cold drinks along with snacks will be available at Cheltenham Racecourse Station and the Refreshment Room at Broadway Station. Card and cash payments accepted.

We will be unable to offer hot drinks on the train, but tea and coffee will be available to purchase on the platform at Cheltenham Racecourse Station while the locomotive changed end.

Our partner organisation The Flag and Whistle at Toddington will be open for take-away hot and cold food from 13th April.

A bag will be provided in all compartments, and passengers will be asked to put any rubbish into the bag, seal it and remove from the train.  Large bins are provided as passengers leave the platform. Customers are asked to remove any item of personal belongings that they may have brought with them. Spare bags will be available from the train crews if required.

Station Facilities

Access to the platform will be restricted to those who will be travelling.  Toilets will be open at each station and sanitiser will be available as you enter each toilet block; all visitors are encouraged to use it and follow the guidelines regarding handwashing.

The shop is now open for customers to visit; it will open 20 min before the first train leaves and will close when the last train leaves Toddington. (Please be aware it will not be open when the last train arrives back to Toddington at the end of the day) If you are on the 15:00 please visit the shop before you start your trip to avaoid disapointment.

Please be aware that, while the stations will be open, ancillary attractions such as small museums, have-a-go mini signal box, children’s playground and shops will not be open.

We request that passengers keep a safe distance from fellow travellers.

Cleanliness

We’ve increased the intensity and frequency of cleaning on our trains and at stations and installed new signage and floor markings at our locations; we ask that everyone follows markings and signs.

We will continue to carry out overnight fogging which sprays disinfectant directly onto hard surfaces, killing viruses and bacteria.

A bag will be provided in all compartments, and passengers will be asked to put any rubbish into the bag, seal it and remove from the train.  Large bins are provided as passengers leave the platform. Further customers are asked to remove any item of personal belongings that they may have brought with them. Spare bags will be available from the train crews if required.
